#BOONDOCKSBACK . That’s right. Boondock Saints 3: Legion is officially happening! It was announced on the official Boondock Saints, Boondock Saints 2, and Troy Duffy’s Facebook pages. That’s not all! In Duffy’s announcement video he also announced that the series will be rebooted in the Boondock Saints TV show. We will get to see how the MacManus brothers became The Saints! Sounds more like an origin story than a reboot, but I’ll take it!
Boondock Saints was released in 1999, and 10 years later we got Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day. Thank fully we only had to wait 8 years for a third movie. We’re even getting more than we asked for. As we reported before, the official Boondock Saints Facebook page reply to a fan’s comment hints that the “TV show” is actually a Netflix series. This isn’t confirmed, and there hasn’t been any news if Netflix is funding the show (or potentially the movie) or if they’re just the distribution channel.
“A television series is the perfect medium for story telling inside the world of our beloved blue-collar super heroes. The brothers have always been defenders of the people, justice, fairness and the city of Boston”, said Duffy in a press release. “In this sensitive time of human rights unrest, government scandal and civil corruption, there couldn’t be a better moment to re-launch the brothers iconic brand of justice in the Cradle of Democracy”.
But wait, there’s more! Rocco (David Della Rocco) appeared in this video to tell us that we can get exclusive Boondock Saints: Origins products and get the pilot episode and the entire first season before it’s aired on “any network TV or streaming stuff”. You’ll get a box (see below) sent straight to your door, and for the next 10 months limited edition Boondock Saints: Origin s**t will show up at your door. Visit boondocksback.com to get yours. It will set you back $598 but only if you’re one of the first 5,000 buyers. After that it will cost you $$798. The product page doesn’t mention what will be in the box or subsequent boxes, but it does say the total value of the 10 shipments will be $1,200. I’ll gladly accept the box if someone wants to send me one…just sayin’. There are two additional tiers, but they’re so costly that I’ll recommend you check them out for yourself on the website.
At the top of the website there is a count down. It’s probably counting down to the release of the origin show. As long as my math is correct, the series will be released on Sunday, June 25. Sunday is an odd day to release a show, but in the Catholic religion Sunday is a day of worship. The first film opens with the brothers entering a church in the middle of the priest’s homily to kneel at the base of the statue of Jesus on the cross to pray before kissing the statue’s feet and leaving. I wouldn’t say they’re traditionally religious, but the brothers are definitely religious people. That’s my long-winded way of saying Sunday is the perfect day.
As many fans know, the original movie’s release date was pushed back because of the Columbine school shooting. This was a very considerate thing for the studio to do given the amount of gun violence in the series and the tragedy of the shooting. Boondock Saints didn’t do very well in theaters, but it found a cult following in the years that passed. The movie and merch sales gathered such a following that studios couldn’t turn away from the idea of making a second movie. The sequel didn’t do well in theaters either, but it left us with a cliffhanger ending that any fan of The Saints would want to see what happens next.
Boondock Saints 2 was made for $8 million while the original was made for $7 million. That doesn’t sound too bad, but that doesn’t account for inflation. The $7 million budget plus inflation would be $9,958,697. That’s right. After accounting for inflation, Boondock Saints 2 was made for almost $2 million less than the original. Big budgets don’t necessarily equate to a hit movie, but an extra $2 million couldn’t hurt. As far as movie franchises go, neither movie was given a lot to work with, but they definitely entertained us.
I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to get another Boondock Saints movie. The TV show is an added bonus. If you’re looking for some Boondock Saints merch, they’re having a clearance sale to make room for the new merch from the movie and TV show. Go here to check it out.
