In 2017 I had some of the best gaming experience of my life. With games like Horizon Zero Dawn, Zelda, Breath of the Wild, Persona 5, and many more, 2017 proved to be a great year for video games. 2018 is off to the same kind of start with titles like, DragonBall Fighter Z, Far Cry 5, and my surprise hit Monster Hunter World. With all these fantastic titles that have already been released, I wanted to take a look at the rest of 2018 and give you my most anticipated titles.
- Metro Exodus
Metro Exodus is on the list mainly because of my love for the Metro series. Ghe Ukrainian developer 4A Games, has shown that they can make incredibly beautiful games even when they are set in post nuclear holocaust Russia. At E3 2017 a gameplay trailer was shown, and featured some amazing lighting effects while in the tunnels of Russia. After a brief fight with some mutated monster you enter into a beautiful open world environment full of lush flora and fauna. Even though we don’t know a lot about Metro Exodus we do know that the developers are looking to continue to grow the world that they started and to build upon the mechanics and story that has made the Metro series a fan favorite. I can’t wait to try it out.
- Detroit: Become Human
David Cage’s Detroit: Become Human has promised to be the game of infinite choices and all the footage and coverage that I have seen so far has lived up to that expectation. The game focuses around three androids Kara, who is a servant android; Connor, who is helps police to hunt down deviant androids; and Markus, who looks to be a the leader of an android uprising. They may “survive or die” depending on dialogue choices that shape the story depending on the choices that the player has made. There are many games that make this same claim, but ultimately all the choices lead to the same outcome. Detroit: Become Human is looking to change all of that and I can’t wait to see if David Cage can finally deliver on the promise.
- God of War
Oh Man! 19 days and counting! Sony Santa Monica Studios is looking to make a huge splash this year with the release of God of War. The God of War series is known for its high-octane combos, stunning graphics, and its perpetually angry protagonist Kratos. This time around we’re seeing a more somber Kratos, perhaps because of his son Atreus. When I saw that Atreus was a companion of Kratos, I was worried that he would be annoying and not contribute anything to the gameplay or story. However, it looks like the developers have not made that mistake. The game is set in the world of Norse Mythology which is foreign to Kratos but not to Arteus who translates the language and also read hieroglyphics so he always seems needed. The game looks incredible and the fact that the game is done in one continuous shot means that there are no CGI’d cutscenes. Everything in the game is a testament to technical achievement that this game is, and I’m extremely excited to play this one.
- Red Dead Redemption 2
I mean what is there to say about this one, Rockstar Games’ Red Dead Redemption was a monster hit in 2010. The sequel is looking to be another hit for the studio. The game is set in the Old West and follow Van de Linde gang member Arthur Morgan. The game in Rockstar fashions features both a single player and multiplayer online experience. Rockstar has done a great job of keeping the secrets to Red Dead 2, so there isn’t a lot to say about this. However it’s Rockstar so they don’t know how to make bad games. With a rumored Battle Royale mode set in the Old West, October 26th can’t get here fast enough.
E3 2016 at the very end of the Sony conference we got the first look at my most anticipated game of 2018, SPIDERMAN! There have been many Spiderman games, and most of them have been pretty bad. This one I truly believe will be the best. At the helm Insomniac Games, the studio behind games like Sunset Overdrive and Ratchet and Clank both of which specializes in high-flying movement, have earned my trust that they can correctly simulate the movement and web-slinging of Spiderman. The game features all the staples of Spiderman, Peter Parker, Aunt May, and Mary Jane, plus a newcomer to the Spiderman video game universe Miles Morales. He becomes Spiderman in the Ultimate Marvel Comics imprint. The developers over at Insomniac told us that this isn’t an origin story, that this Peter Parker is 25 and has been Spiderman for some time now. This fact is making people believe that Miles Morales will make an appear as Peter’s sidekick as he grooms him to become a hero. With Insomniac Games pedigree and the more Peter Parker focused story, Spiderman is my most anticipated game of 2018.
