Nintendo unveils its Online plans for the Switch

Nintendo has finally announced their online service for the Nintendo Switch. It seems about what we expected and they gave Switch owners something they’ve been asking for since the beginning as a nice bonus. Starting this September you will need to subscribe to play online with other Switch owners. Nintendo has a few price tiers:

  • One month $3.99
  • Three months $7.99
  • Twelve month $19.99
  • Twelve month Family $34.99

The family subscription will allow you to share with up to 8 accounts across different systems. All subscriptions are account specific meaning that if you share a single Switch then only the signed in account has these features. However if you sign into your account on a friend’s Switch you’d have access. Nintendo has not commented on how many systems your Nintendo account can be signed into but one has to assume they have a cap of some type.

With your subscription you’ll also gain access to a Netflix style back catalog of classic games. Nintendo will start with just 10 when it launches this fall but will probably either increase that number or rotate games out. The latter seems more likely as this is what Nintendo announced last year. The 10 games to start us off will be:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Mario Bros.
  • Donkey Kong
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Balloon Fight
  • Ice Climbers
  • Dr. Mario
  • Soccer
  • Tennis

That’s a pretty decent starting line up and here’s hoping they leave the first five in there!

Nintendo also gave us one more unexpected surprise with this announcement. The Nintendo online subscription will include cloud backups for the Switch! This is exciting news as users have been clamoring for this feature since launch. No more living in fear that if you break your system that you’ll lose 200 plus hours of Breath of the Wild! Who else is excited about this? Let us know in the comments below.
