In the past 2 years alone, there have been many attempts at adapting anime into a live action film that has left fans, (including myself) with a bitter taste of disappointment. From the horrid Deathnote movie on Netflix, to the barely bearable Fullmetal Alchemist, live action adaptations have yet to appease fans. None of that seems to bother the big wigs over at Legendary films or Sunrise studios, however, who announced at the Anime Expo 2018 that they were working on a live action Gundam movie. Sunrise will be working closely with Legendary films, the company responsible for the big hit Pacific Rim, to bring the mecha-anime to life on the big screen.
As of right now, nothing more than knowledge of the project being underway is known. We don’t even know which of the many Gundam series’ will be used to make the film, if a new plot will be created instead, or even what era the movie will take place in (since their are so many to choose from). All we truly know, is that we anime fans of all types are tired of having our favorite characters and stories being thrown into a river that leads to a sewage dump. With the lack of current adaptations not giving the depth and screen time our anime deserves, let’s hope that the two companies have acknowledged this and will have something up their sleeves for the Gundam series.
