Although September’s 2018 Nintendo Direct event was postponed due to a massive earthquake in Japan, that didn’t stop Funimation from teasing Broly as a playable character for Super Smash Ultimate come this December. With their Twitter birds in tow, the company twitted a photo of Broly’s shadow as though he can be unlocked along with the caption “Ultimate? Try Legendary!”. Along with a spacial shout out to the upcoming Dragonball Super: Broly film coming out also in December.

Now, because Bandai-Namco is helping out with the development of the game, Broly being a playable character is not that farfetched. In fact, Bandai Namco own the rights to the Dragonball FighterZ game so it would make sense from a business standpoint to leave your mark on another companies project to represent your contribution to that project. Funimation has also stated in the past that they wanted to throw Goku in to the Smash fray at some point, however, it would make more sense to use Broly instead. The reasoning behind that is due in part by the upcoming Dragonball Super: Broly movie. Did I mention that both Smash Ultimate and the movie come out in December? Coincidence? I think not! It’s the perfect marketing for two colossal franchises.
